Estoril is now the third licensed online operator in Portugal

Portugal has now officially issued their first online casino license under the new regulated online gambling market and the third in total! 

Recently the local gaming regulator Serviço Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ) announced that they have issued an online games of chance license to Estoril Sol Digital Online Gaming and Products Services, SA to use via the domain Estroilsolcasinos.pt. 

Estoril Sol already operates three brick and mortar casinos namely Casino Estoril, Casino Lisbon and Casino da Povoa. These casinos received revenue of €182m in 2015 which is two thirds of the total casino market value.

New online casino

The new site is already live and is licensed to offer online casino games such as blackjack, roulette and video slots. Estoril’s online casino is powered by the Brussels-based gaming provider Gaming1.

The launch of Estoril’s online platform makes it the third licensed online operator in Portugal. The first was to French operator Betclic Everest’s sports betting site and the second was the Malta-based Bet Entertainment Technologies Ltd’s online sportsbook. 

It’s important to note that casino sites are taxed at 15% of their gross gaming revenue while sports betting sites are require to pay 8% tax on their betting turnover. This is a very expensive rate that increases once the online site has reached a turnover above €30 million. Although Estoril might be the third licensed online platform in Portugal, it is the first one to post an online profit.
